Meander

This week for Maths craft we have been working on string art and meanders.

On Wednesday we worked on string art. String art is using string or wool to create patterns or pictures. This could be done on a piece of wood or on paper.

On Thursday we worked on meanders. Meanders are repeated patterns in a continuous line.

Penguin
We were also told to choose what project we are keen to take on for the next 10 hours in Maths craft. I chose string art and I am going to try to make a penguin.

Neil Finn

In music, our task was to create a profile about a New Zealand musician that we were given.

I got Neil Finn and I did it on Piktochart.

Piktochart:

What am I learning?
We are learning to research New Zealand artist.

How does this work show my learning?
This work shows my learning because I took my time to create this profile.

What am I wondering?
Has Neil ever thought about retiring?

Film Terminology

In English, we have been learning to:

  • Thinking critically to identify and describe the key aspects of a visual text.
  • Develop self-direction, responsibility for cooperation and accountability while working with others.
  • Develop creativity and innovation skills by creating an original and engaging presentation.
  • Develop critical thinking and evaluation by writing an essay.

I showed my learning by making a slide of different film angles

Growing Seeds

Aim: To look at the different growing conditions and how these affect the growth of seeds.

Method:

1. We worked in groups of 3-4
2. Potting mix was put into the cups
3. The cups were planted with radish seeds
4. Each cup had a different growing condition:

Cup1- Normal
Cup 2- Red cellophane
Cup 3- Over watered
Cup 4- Under watered or green cellophane

The plants grew in their cups for 10 days before they were measured.

Findings:

Plant growing condition
Height after 10 days (mm)
Normal
76mm
Blue cellophane
24mm
Red cellophane
80mm
Overwater

Clear
38mm

59mm

The normal seedling was planted in normal potting mix and grew to a height of ____76_____mm.
The blue cellophane seedling was planted in a normal potting mix, covered in green cellophane and watered. It grew to a height of ___24_____mm. The red cellophane seedling was planted in normal potting mix............. to a height of ____80_______mm. The overwatered seedling was planted in a normal potting mix, the water could not drain out the bottom of the pot and it grew to a height of ___38___mm.

Conclusion:

From the pictures and evidence, we can conclude that:

The seedling height was:

1.80mm
2.76mm
3. 59mm
4. 38mm

The best-growing conditions were:

1. Red
2. Normal
3. Clear
4. Overwater

Therefore the seedling with best conditions grew to a height of 80mm.

Traditional Tales

Image result for beauty and the beast
Beauty and The Beast
In English, we have been learning about Traditional Tales. We were able to read and watch tales of our own choice. I did fairy tales, I chose Beauty and The Beast and also The Little Mermaid. I chose to do a static image for these 2 fairy tales. One of my groupmates did Greek Mythology and they made a static image of Medusa. Their story was about Medusa & Perseus.

Image result for the little mermaid
The Little Mermaid
Before I chose these 2 tales I read 2 books full of fairy tales and chose out of them. I did Beauty and The Beast because I really like it. I really like the idea of using a rose as a connection to a human and a beast. I chose The Little Mermaid because I learned that if you really like/love someone then you would do anything for them. In Ariel's case, she sacrificed her voice for the person she loves.

Beauty and The Beast:

Beauty and The Beast is a fairy tale about a girl named Belle and a prince who was under a curse. The prince was under a curse because of his rudeness. The witch that cast a spell on him said he would be under the curse until he learned how to love someone and the person he loved learned how to love him and he had a time limit, a rose symbolized this time limit. Once the last petal falls the prince will be stuck as a beast forever. Belle stumbled at his palace because she got lost looking for her father. The beast offered her food and warmth. Belle stayed at the palace for quite a while and she started to get feelings for the beast, and the beast also started to get feelings for her. They were happy until one day a group of town's people invaded the beast's palace and a guy from the town took Belle away and stabbed the beast. Something tragic happened to the guy and Belle ran to the beast, she cried and cried as the last petal falls. Her tears fell onto the beast's wound and something happened, a light started and the beast was no longer a beast, he was now the prince that was once under a curse. The prince and Belle all lived happily ever after.

The Little Mermaid:
Image result for the little mermaid
The Little Mermaid
Ariel was a mermaid that likes to go on adventures. One day while she was on an adventure a ship came by, the ship caught on fire and a prince that was on the ship fell into the water. Ariel saved him and brought him to land. The prince woke up to Ariel's face, Ariel quickly ran away and that's when the prince searched for her. Ariel caught feelings for Prince Eric and she wanted to be with him. An evil sea witch made a deal with her, the deal was in exchange for legs she will give the witch her voice. Ariel agreed to the deal because she really loves the prince. The prince and Ariel fell deeper in love and was soon to be married. The evil sea witch turned into Ariel and locked the real Ariel somewhere. The real Ariel escaped and stopped the sea witch in the form of her from marrying the prince. The sea witch was punished and Prince Eric and Ariel all lived happily ever after.

Making:

In order to make the static image of Beauty and The Beast, I searched up a drawing of it on Google. I originally only copied the girl but drew the rose on my own without copying it from the Internet. I used a picture as a guide for the colours I can use to colour my image. A group mate helped me with my work and made me a rose out of clay. They used red, brown and green to make the rose.

I did the same thing for the Ariel drawing I drew. But the Ariel drawing is a bit simpler than the Beauty and The Beast's one. I drew Ariel's face and shoulders but didn't draw her whole body. I only needed to use 3 colours for my Ariel drawing but I had to use a lot of different colours for my Beauty and The Beast drawing.

Three Piece Puzzle

Task: In Tec we have been making a three-piece puzzle. Making this puzzle includes planning, researching, and drawing.

Planning/Research: We watched a YouTube video about the puzzle and also searched up on Google what it looks like. We also had to plan before we made it.

Drawing: Before we drew on the timber we first practiced the measuring on paper.

Transferring your paper on to the timber- How did you do this?
When we transferred the measurements onto the timber, all of the measurements were the same except for some parts of it like measuring the things we were gonna cut we used one of the pieces of timber for perfect measurements. We also drew lines across the piece of timber to find the very middle of it. We also used the timber to find the middle of our timber. We used a try square for straight lines.

How did you make it?
1. Researching it so we know what it looks like.
2. Practicing drawing on paper.
3. Transferring the measurements onto the piece of timber/wood.
4. Using the chisel, drill and radial saw we made our pieces.
5. We made sure that all the pieces fit together if they didn't then we had to make some changes and if they did then we were good to go.
6. Using sandpaper we made sure that our pieces were smooth.
7. We coated our pieces with polyurethane to make our pieces stronger and last longer.

Problem Solving

What did you learn about?
I learned about different ways to find solutions to problems. I also learned about keeping calm in times where we get frustrated while a problem is occurring.

When discussing "Thought Challenges" what did you notice about yourself?
I noticed that I started to think more carefully instead of the usual aggressively fixing a problem.

What solutions can you try when you face a challenge during the Business & Enterprise kete? Give an example.
During the Business & Enterprise kete, I will be able to come challenges by talking to my group members if we're having a disagreement. If it gets to the point where everyone is frustrated then I will tell them to cool down and talk to me again once they have cooled down. Talking to someone while you're frustrated only makes things worse.

Interpersonal Skills:Conflict

What did you learn about?
I learned that there are 3 conflict ways. Aggressive, assertive, and passive.

When discussing conflict styles what did you notice about yourself?
I noticed that I approach conflicts differently when with different people. When I have conflicts with my family I tend to be passive and let things pass. But if it were conflict with my friends then I tend to be both aggressive and assertive.

How can you reduce conflict during the Business & Enterprise kete? Give an example.

If something went wrong like our product didn't turn out the way we wanted it to and everyone started blaming one another then I would tell the team to calm down and talk about it instead of blaming each other.

Give an example of when you might need to keep calm during Business & Enterprise kete.

If someone is making fun of our product then instead of losing our temper then we should just stay calm and smile. We should not let this comment get the best of us.

Interpersonal Skills: Being Mindful

What did you learn about?
I learned that being mindful is about being aware of our surroundings and being in the moment. Being mindful can also be about our 5 senses, touch, hear, smell, taste, and see. We can also be mindful of what we say to other people so that we do not say something that we are not suppose to.

Being mindful has taught that not only do we have to be mindful of what we say we also have to be mindful of our surroundings.

Was there anything you felt difficult to understand? Why?
It was difficult to understand ways of showing mindfulness. I guess this is because we have not really been taught before to be mindful of our surroundings but to only be mindful of what we say.

When talking to a classmate how did you know what they were feeling?
I knew how they felt because the way their body was postured, how they talked and also their facial expressions.

How can you apply your new knowledge to the Business Kete?
I would pay careful attention to how my group talks, and how they talk and also their facial expressions. If I notice something then I would take quick action so it doesn't get worse.

Interpersonal Skills: Who Moved My Cheese

What did you learn about?
I learnt about the video called "Who Moved My Cheese". I also learned that Resilience is never giving up.

Quote: "Resilience is the ability to attack while running away".

Was there anything you felt difficult to understand?
No, there wasn't anything that was hard to understand.

How did you relate to the video "Who Moved My Cheese? "
There was this person that didn't want to get out if his comfort zone. It teaches me that sometimes we need to get out of our comfort zone to try new things.

How can you apply your new knowledge to the Business Kete?
If none of the topics are in my comfort zone then I will still try it. Or if something goes wrong and the only solution is something that is not in my comfort zone then I will persevere through it and will try to do it.

Jingle Update

What are we learning?
We are learning how to write a jingle and how to film it.

What is your job?
My job is to write a letter to our principal, make a choreography and edit the film.

How will you ensure that we are successful?
Do the jobs properly and make sure not to pass the deadline.

How does this work show my learning?
This work shows my learning because I took part in the task.

What am I wondering?
What would be the best way to manage our time?

Investigating Refraction- Bending Light

Aim: To investigate how light is affected by changing the substance it is traveling through.

Equipment: Ray box, power source, glass or perspex block, single-slit ray slide.

Method:

1. Collect the equipment from your teacher, and set them up to produce a single beam of light.
2. Place the glass block in the shaded area below.
3. Place your box at the top of the page and shine the beam so it travels along the 10-degree line to the center of the protractor (this is your angle of incidence).
4. Read the angle the light leaves the glass block (this is your angle of refraction).
5. Continue the investigation

Results:

10 degrees - 6.6 degrees
20 degrees - 13.2 degrees
30 degrees - 14.5 degrees
40 degrees - 25.4 degrees

Observing Reflection in Curved Mirrors

Today in Science we did an experiment using concave mirrors and convex mirrors.

Concave mirrors have shiny surfaces on the inside of the curve. One example of a concave mirror is when you look at a spoon, the bowl of the soon is concave.

Convex mirrors have shiny surfaces on the outside of the curve. An example is the back of a spoon.

Aim: To investigate the reflection of light rays in concave and convex mirrors.

Equipment: Ray box, triple-slit ray slide, concave and convex mirrors, power supply.

Method:

1. Set up your ray box, triple-slit ray slide and power supply.
2. Place the mirrors on your book as indicated below. Place the ray box at the top of the page and shine the 3 rays of light at the mirror.
3. Ensure that the middle ray of light is hitting the mirror at a 90-degree angle.
4. Carefully trace the direction of the three incident rays and the three reflected rays.

Results:
When the light hit the concave mirror the reflection made some sort of "X" with the lights. When the light hit the convex mirror the reflection when sideways.

Catchy Jingle

10 things that make a catchy single:

-You must tell the buyer why he/she should buy the product.
-Use words that will make an impact on the consumers and will make them buy the product.
-The lyrics and tune should both be simple so that they're easier to remember and hum.
-Choose words that are easy to understand.
-Repeating the words and using rhyme will make it easier for people to hum and jingle.
-Make clever use of the products name.
-If the name is too long or it doesn't fit well in the jingle, use words that will make people remember.
-Choose appropriate music so the jingle can be sung.
-It should not be too long, a 30-second jingle should be fine.
-Identify your target audience, and choose a genre that appeals to them.
-Using what's trending and popular is good too.
-Use humour.
-Use expressions according to the theme of the product.

Investigating the Laws of Reflection

Today in Science we did a practical about lights. We also learnt about reflections.

Aim: To investigate how light behaves when it hits a plane (flat) mirror.

Method:
1. Collect a ray box, power supply and single-slit ray slide from your teacher, and set them up to produce a single beam of light.

2. Place a plane mirror on the diagram of the protractor as described below.

3. Vary the angle of incidence and record the angle of reflection in the results table.

Result:

0 degrees = 0 degrees
10 degrees = 10 degrees
20 degrees = 20 degrees
30 degrees = 30 degrees
40 degrees = 40 degrees
50 degrees = 50 degrees
60 degrees = 60 degrees
70 degrees = 70 degrees
80 degrees = 80 degrees

The angle of reflection was the same as the angle of incidence. This could because the mirror we used was just flat and it didn't have any other shapes in it.

Art Reflection

What did you find most challenging about the print design process?
I found printing even quality the most challenging when I was printing. It was difficult to print it without any white marks on the print.

What did you find most challenging about the painting composition process?
The most challenging part was drawing thumbnail sketches. Sometimes I had details I wanted to draw but if I were to draw it as a thumbnail sketch then it would be difficult because then I would have to make it small. Some things are better big than small. In this case, I was better off drawing the different designs on the big piece.

What mistake did you make that taught you something?
When I accidentally cut my thumb when I was lino cutting it taught me not to put my fingers in front when I was cutting.

What was most successful about your work?
I think the most successful was when I finished both my print and painting to a good standard.

What could you do to improve your work?
I think if I had chosen better colours for my painting then it would look better. Also, if I had maybe done my printing better it would look better. My printing had a lot of white marks because the oil paint couldn't cover it. If I had rolled out the paint of my cut better then I think it would stop the white marks from coming and my print would be better.

Reflection:

What have I learned about:

I have learnt how to print properly and the different techniques of painting.  I also learned how to cut properly so that I wouldn't cut my fingers again.

I didn't add as many details to my print and painting because I know painting and cutting them would be difficult if I were to add tiny details.

Vegetarian Food Reflection

What were your thoughts prior to eating?
I thought that it wouldn't taste good because of the ingredients we will use.

Did those thoughts change once you had sampled it?
Yes, my thoughts did change once I had a sample of it because it actually tasted good. It tasted different but it was fun having a go at cooking new things.

Why is it good to have one vegetarian dish per week in your diet?
It's good to have one vegetarian dish per week because it will give you more nutrients, minerals and fibre.

Meat supplies us with Protein and Iron. Give an example of a vegetable that offers this well:
Beans are rich in both protein and iron.

Hydroelectric

Give two reasons why Hydroelectric power is useful to us:

  1. Using water, wind, solar and geothermal resources is better than using resources like coal, oil, and gas because they are renewable, unlike the coal, oil, and gas.
  2. Water is provided free by nature so we don't have to go digging everywhere in order to find coal and risk endangering human society or the animal society.

Disadvantages of Hydroelectric power:

Disturbs aquatic life: Hydropower plants are constructed across rivers, and this can interfere with aquatic life. There is a huge chance of aquatic life finding their way into the penstock and eventually into turbines where they will get killed. Building dams in a few certain places can also interfere with mating patterns, seasons and breeding areas of the aquatic animals.

Construction needs large area: In order to build a dam, people have to install power production units, plus transformers, and fasten them onto the main grid requires a big piece of land. People may need to clear out forests or places where people live in order to achieve getting a piece of land. If we were to keep clearing out forests or places where people live then where would the animals go? Where would the humans go? If we put the human houses with the other human houses then it will get crowded. People will use more fossil fuel, and we could get more pollution.

Static Image

Task: Blog your static image and include your commentary.

Static image:

Commentary:

'Abomination' by Robert Swindells.

In this novel, a young girl named Martha Dewhurst is stuck living in a life where she can't do anything she wants. She can't listen to pop music, watch TV, and she can't wear shop bought clothes.

My static image portrays the idea that you can't always get everything you want in life, and that sometimes it could be depressing.

In my static image, the musical notes represent the music. The microphone represents pop music singers. The dress on the MP3 player screen represents the clothes she badly wants to wear. The forbidden sign represents how the music playing on the MP3 player is forbidden, and how the dress is also forbidden. The earphones represent how Martha likes pop music because she wants to listen to them. The quote on the screen acts like the lyrics playing from the song.

I have included musical notes, a microphone, dress, MP3 player and earphones to my static image because these are the elements I need in order to show my idea for the quote I have chosen. I think these elements I have picked will really show the audience what I'm trying to portray, and how it connects to the quote.

My static image is not that colourful, this is because I'm trying to portray how not being able to do things can make your life dull and depressing. The only colourful object in my image is the dress. The reason for that is because that dress is her hope, and it's one of the things that can save her from her depressing life. The dress also acts as the representative for the clothes Martha wants to wear. The rest of the objects in my image is colour in black or gray. My background is the colour white because it represents how boring and plain Martha's life is. These three colours represent depression, sadness, and boringness, and those are the reasons why I have chosen to use them in my image.

I used the quote "I like pop music, and TV and clothes but I can't have them. They're forbidden" to show that even the simplest things in life can be forbidden sometimes.

Sustained Silent Reading

This week's learning: For this week's learning I have been doing my static image. I decided to do the quote "I like pop music, and TV and clothes but I can't have them. They're forbidden." For this quote, I will draw an MP3 player with a dress as a screen, I will also draw musical notes on the background making it look like it's playing music. I have only drawn my plan and haven't gotten to the final drawing just yet.

SSR- Reading

For sustained silent reading, we were told to go on ReadyTheory and do quizzes.

I did one about meteors. It told me that shooting starts are not actually shooting stars, they are meteors. Meteors start as meteoroids. Meteoroids are particles in a solar system that come from comets or asteroids.

I enjoyed doing this quiz because it has thought me something that I did not know before.

Image result for coco movieToday in English we had free time for a few minutes. We were allowed to do whatever we wanted. We didn't have to read a book, we were allowed to watch, do quizzes, and many more.

I watched the trailer for 'Coco'. Coco is a film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

I think if I were to watch the full movie then I would enjoy it because it is mostly about music. I enjoy listening to music, so watching a movie that is mostly about music would be really fun.

I think the target audience would be for people of all ages.

Diffusion

This is what it looked like before we added the purple crystals in the water.

I think the particles in the hot water were vibrating more so this caused the pigment to spread faster than the pigment in the cold water.

This particles in the cold water were moving a lot slower than the particles in the hot water.

I think the temperature of the water might have something to do with how the pigments and particles move.

Heating Brass Ring and Ball

Yesterdays Experiment:
In yesterdays experiment we heated up a brass ring and ball. We were observing it while we were heating them up to see what would happen to them while they're being heated up.

Observations:
We saw that when we heated up the ring it started turning bronze after a few seconds. This could be because the ring is absorbing the heat of the flames and in some sort of way the heat is having a reaction with the material used to make the ring.

I saw that the ball turned from bronze to purple, but it did not glow red like the ring did. This could be because of the shape of the two things. It could also be because the ball was, well a full sphere and the ring had a hole in the middle of it.

We also noticed that when the ball and ring were put in the water, the water would start boiling and splashing everywhere. We're guessing that the temperature has to be above 100 degrees for the water to start splashing everywhere, so when we put the ball and ring in the water they must've been over 100 degrees. Because when you boil water they go up to 100 degrees but it doesn't pass that number, it also doesn't start splashing everywhere on its own.

We noticed that once it has been fully cooled down the ring and the ball will turn back to its original colour, and the same thing will happen again if you were to heat up and cool it down again.

When the two things have been heated up it was a bit difficult to pull out the ball from inside the ring. This could be because the particles in the brass ball have expanded due to the heat energy from the Bunsen burner. The ring has also expanded, this could be because the particles movements have increased, making the hole in the ring expand more.

Last Day of Drama

What have I learnt?
I've learnt the different types of jobs in a musical theatre. (The jobs that happen behind the scenes)

How does this work show my learning?
We made backgrounds to show that we learnt something about a being in a musical theatre. We also used these backgrounds for our performance.

What did I find challenging?
I found performing on the stage very challenging. I'm not really a big fan of performing in front of many people.

What did I enjoy?
I enjoyed learning a new song from a movie.

What am I wondering?
I'm wondering if our performance would be better if we added movements.

What will I do next time?
Next time I would want us to dance a little bit instead of just standing there.

What was it like performing on the day?
Image result for you're welcome moana gifI didn't want to go up on stage due to my stage frights, but the show had to go on so I gathered all of my courage and went up on stage.

Critical Thinking Questions- Gloriavale

Question:
Image result for gloriavaleWhose voices do we not hear?
The voices we do not hear are the children's voices. If the children were allowed to speak then maybe we could get another perspective about Gloriavale, because at the moment it's only the adults that are telling us their point of views. Maybe the children have different thoughts about their life. We're also not hearing the voices of those who do/did not enjoy their life in Gloriavale.

Musical Theatre Research

Task 1:

Group Song:
'You're Welcome' from Moana.

What is the song about?
The song is about Mau's accomplishments as 'the hero of men'.

What is difficult about singing this song?
The difficult part about singing this song is the rap. You have to say the words clearly and loud, and you also have to sound enthusiastic.

How are you feeling about your performance?
I'm feeling a little nervous about our performance. Performing in front of a lot of audiences is pretty nerve-wracking, especially if you're singing a song and you're in the front line.

Separation via chromatography

Today in Science we did the same experiment as last week. Though this time we used markers instead of leaves we've ground.

Today's experiment and last weeks experiment are very different.

Last weeks experiment:
For last weeks experiment, we grounded leaves to use.

The pigments from the leaves did not work as well as we expected. This is because we used a lot more solvent than the solute.

If we used more solute than the solvent then maybe it would've worked better.

This weeks experiment:
This weeks experiment worked perfectly. We can finally see the different pigments in one colour.

This is probably because the pigments in the markers are more concentrated than the ones in the leaves.

As you can see in the picture there's a colour that goes up faster than the other colours. This is because that colour is lighter than the other pigments.

The best way to think of it is having a pebble and grains of sand and dropping them into a stream. Which one will fall first? The sand will fall first, right? This is because the sand is a lot lighter than the pebble.

Extracting Water From Coke

Aim: To see how much sugar is in normal/diet coke.

Methods:
-We first set up our equipment

Materials:
-Beaker
-Tube
-Bunsen Burner
-Stand
-Boiling Tube

Results:
On our first try, our experiment overflowed and exploded and landed inside the beaker. This is because we added too much heat and the tube was too close to the bottom of the boiling tube.

On our second try, our experiment had finally work and the water was finally getting separated from the sugary substance. It has worked because we were no longer adding too much heat to the boiling tube and the tube was no longer close to the bottom of the tube.
