English - Story Understanding

In English we have been learning about stories and how to understand them.

I think we are learning about this because they reflect what happens in the real world.

Stories:

Willowmaid helped me to understand that most people take what they want without thinking of the consequences that may come with it.

Tarzan could be connected to how some people take advantage of what nature gives us, instead of taking care of it because we humans depend on nature too.

Avatar: The Great Divide helped me to understand that sometimes we argue with someone without hearing their side of the story.

Supergirl: Welcome to Earth could be connected to how some people treat those that are "different" to them badly.

Zootopia helped me to understand how some people judge others based on their cultural background, just like how Nick judges Judy because she was a bunny.

Avengers: Endgame helped me to understand that even though there is so much good in the world there will always be evil in it somewhere.

Ryan Murphy's Glee Never Been Kissed could be connected to how some of us use people for things that they shouldn't be used for and how we treat people just because they are not alike us.

Butterflies by Patricia Grace helped me to understand that everyone has different opinions and different perspectives of life.

Avatar: The Waterbending Master could be connected to how those that are "powerful" treat those who they think are "weak".

Barriers by Hinewirangi helped me to understand that sometimes language could be a barrier to interacting with people but it should never be a reason to stop try

Science Project

In Science, we were given the task of making a poster, slideshow, or stop-motion of 4 things that we have learned about our topic.

I chose to do a slideshow.

Orphism - Lino Cut

L.O: To understand who Sonia Terk Delaunay is and colour theory through lino printing. Also, to learn about leading lines and focal points.

Techniques That We Have Been Using:

-Researching what Orphism art and Sonia Terk Delanuay's work
-Researching information about Sonia Terk Delaunay and putting it on our blog
-Creating thumbnail sketches of our own ideas. With colours and notes about each idea
-Transferring our ideas on lino cut plates - two layer plates from one design

My Lino Cut Design:

The lino cut plate on the left side is my background and I will print it first.

The lines on the plates are my leading lines that lead to my focal point which is the two semi-circles on the right lino cut plate.

The two semi-circles will be the second layer of my lino print and it will stand out most because it ill be bolder and there will be leading lines leading to it.

Before I chose this design I had two other designs, but they didn't work because they had too many shapes which hides the focal point.

Even though I choose that design I still think it has room for improvement. I think I should draw less shapes and stick to 1-3 shapes.

Film Study

In English, we have been watching Zootopia and after that, we are writing an essay about it. I chose to write about how Nick (one of the characters) changed throughout the movie.

This is what I have so far:

Today I’m going to be talking about Nick Wilde and how he changed throughout the movie (Zootopia). I’m going to be talking about Nick because I think he changed A LOT throughout the movie.

In the beginning, we can see that Nick acted like a jerk and thought that people should stick to what they are supposed to do instead of trying to go beyond their limitations. He was caught by Judy (a bunny cop) after he was ‘illegally’ selling ‘pawsicles’ to working businessmen. He played tricks on Judy to get away and also to tell Judy that she was not fit to be a cop because she was just a “dumb bunny”. I think that when they used “sly fox and dumb bunny” it helped me understand that Nick was someone who had a fixed mindset that he was better than everyone and those that don’t stick to what they are supposed to do are dumb.

Towards the middle, Nick became more open about the way he felt and the way he talked. He has shown many changes in the way he acted and the way he talked. For example, when Chief Bogo (Judy’s boss) tried to take Judy’s badge away from her, he stepped up to protect her and he even helped her just because he wanted to and not because Judy forced him too. He also opened up to Judy about what happen to him that made him be who he was. The way that the director set the lighting to low concentration made me realise that the scene where Nick was confessing to Judy about his past was meant to be serious and gloomy.

At the end of the movie, he wasn’t the same old Nick anymore, who acted like a jerk and who was also stubborn. Nick changed the way he looked at life, he changed the way he acted and he also went beyond what he was supposed to be like Judy did. I think when the director used high concentration lighting it made me realise that everything was happy and positive.

Based on the way Nick changed, I would say he changed for the better and not for the bad. When he became a police officer, he proved to the audience that not all stereotypes are true and that people should not get judged because of the way they were in the beginning, because they never know if that person will change themselves. I also think that the journey Nick took to change himself will also motivate us humans to have the courage to change ourselves for the better.
