                                                                     POWER

                                                Why Do We Need Power

  • In our everyday lives, we use power. We can’t live without power (electricity). We can’t imagine what life is without electricity. Every night time, we use a lot of electricity, because we need light so that we can see. Without lights, travelling would be very risky,we won't be aware if there are zombies near by and there's a possibility that we bumped into a dangerous weapon.. Whether its  day time or nigh time, electricity keeps our lives in order. We use power to charge electric motors or to make things work.
  • This energy comes from the movement of electrons. Electrons are small particles that orbit, the nucleus of an atom. When electrons work together to flow along a circuit that's is electricity.

How we make power

One way to make power is through windmills. Modern windmills have three blades. Other number of blades have been tried, but the three blade windmill works greater. Modern windmills rotate clockwise, people say that there are no special reasons for this. Modern windmills are controlled by computer. Windmills are connected to gearbox or generators. Once electricity is made, it is made suitable to enter local grids, it is then used to power your home or someone else's.

Why are group is the most important
Our group is the most important because without it nothing much would really work, like for food, we sometimes need to cook food and without it the stove wouldn't work or the microwave wouldn't work, although you can use fire to cook food. Or for clothing if they were to sew something using a sewing machine without electricity the sewing machine wouldn't work, but they can hand stitch it, but it is still better to use a sewing machine so you can get it done easily.

Fun facts:

  • Only 10% of energy in a light bulb is used to create light.

Sustainability

Aim:
I want to find out how to grow a sustainable garden.

Things I need to consider:
  • Can the plants grow in our climate?
  • What plants can you grow when planted in September?
  • How long do they take to mature? When can they be harvested?
  • How many mature plants will fit into my garden size?
  • How can I water them during the holidays?
  • How do I keep pests away?
Research:

I would like to grow :

  • Silver beet to be ready in November
  • Sunflower to be ready in November
  • Potatoes to be ready in December

Here is a system I found that will water the plants from under the soil.
It is a plastic bottle, and the bottom has been cut up, and the lid has been taken off.

Pest Control

How am I going to keep snails, slugs and birds away from my plants?

https://www.growveg.com/guides/slugs-gardeners-enemy-number-1/

Basically its a plastic bottle that has been cut up in half, and has been put around the seed.

Method:

Equipment
  • Weeding/Gardening Tools
  • Seeds
  • Plastic 2L Water Bottles
  • Scissors
  • String and 1m ruler
  • Stakes

Making Biltong (Beef Jerky)

Aim:
I want to find out how to make biltong (beef jerky).

Method:
The equipment I will need to make biltong...

  • Raw steak
  • Spices for flavouring (a pinch of coriander, ginger, garlic, pepper, chilli, cummin)
  • A small handful of salt
  • String (50cm)
  • Sharp knife
  • Bowl
  • Newspaper
Instruction for making biltong:

  1. Get all of your equipment out, ready for using.
  2. Get your newspaper and lay it on a table.
  3. You then wash your hands.
  4. Then add salt and all of your chosen spices onto a bowl.
  5. Mix your salt and spices together.
  6. Then get your raw steak and cut it into thin strips approximately 1-2cm wide.
  7. Once done get your raw steak and put it down on the newspaper.
  8. Get your seasoning, and massage it onto the meat.
  9. Then get your string that is approximately 50cm long, and tie it at the end of the raw steak.
  10. Then get your meat and tie it on a drying line.
  11. Wash your hands again and clean your workplace once done.
Tip: Make sure that your raw meat is getting air, and make sure that you have something underneath the meat so that it can catch all the blood, that is going to drop from the meat on the first days of it being hanged up.

Results:

The biltong was brown and dry. It was a little hard, but you can still bend it a little. It didn't really smell like raw meat, in fact it didn't really smell like anything. There were fats that had become white. It tasted like plain ordinary meat, at first. But as I kept chewing it, it became more salty.

Discussion:

Why did we salt the meat?

There are two different main reasons on why we salted the meat. The first reason is that the salt will kill the bacteria that is on the outside.

The second reason is that this will absorb all of the water that is in the meat. This will cause it to kill the bacteria because the bacteria needs water for it to grow.

How does salt kill the bacteria?

The salt will drain the meat, and it will cause the bacteria to die because bacteria needs water to live. So then the bacteria will not be able to grow anymore in the dried meat. The bacteria will burst because of the salt.

P.E Class Time

Today in P.E class, we were having  a Jump Jam challenge, to see  which class was the best in Jump Jam. After all of the classes were done dancing, we had an award giving. The awards were for students from each class, to receive an award for showing the CARR values, 2 people were chosen from each class. Once the grown ups were done giving the awards to the students, they announced the winning class for Jump Jam, 7Bk came 3rd and 7Mg, and 7Rc were tied, so we had to dance again, to see who the winning class really is. In the end my class won, and 7Rc came 2nd. Our class then received a trophy, that had our class name on it.

After the challenge, the other classes got dismissed by their teachers.  Our class had P.E for the next period, so we stayed in the gym. For our P.E class we did a beep test. Our gym teacher wanted to know  who was the fittest person in our class. The person who got the most points was Matthew, with 59 points.

Making Ginger Beer

Aim: I want to find out how to make Ginger Beer.

Method:

What I need:

Ginger, Lemon juice, Water, Sugar, Yeast(Ginger Bug), A bottle to put the drink in.

What I need to do:

  1. Peel and grate the fresh ginger using a box grater. You want about 1/4 cup of grated ginger.
  2. Add the cream of tartar (1/2 teaspoon), lemon juice (1/4 cup), and ginger to a large pot.
  3. Add 4 cups of water, and bring the mixture to a full boil.
  4. Turn the heat down to medium, add the sugar and stir until all of the sugar is dissolved.
  5. Add the rest of the (cold) water to the pot (5 cups) and allow it to cool to around 75 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius). Add the yeast (1 teaspoon), stir well.
  6. Cover the pot with a kitchen towel and place in a warm, dark part of your house for 3 hours. The mixture should smell gingery and yeasty!
  7. Using a fine strainer, strain the liquid into a large pitcher to remove all the bits of ginger.
  8. Pour the brew into a clean 2-litre plastic bottle (empty soda water bottles work perfectly, and you can also use 2 one-litre bottles) but do not fill up the bottles all the way because the fermentation will yield carbon dioxide.
Place the ginger beer in a dark, warm room for 2 to 3 days. One to three times a day, carefully loosen the caps to relieve some of the pressure (without opening the bottles all the way). The drink becomes very pressurised and fizzy, so skipping this step could result in a ginger beer bottle explosion. Be very careful in this process and do not point the bottles at anyone’s (or your own face).
After your brew is finished fermenting, you can either add fruit, simple syrup, juice, or liquor to it to create a customised treat, or drink it as is. If you choose to bottle the ginger beer in glass bottles, allow the ginger beer to lose much of its fizz prior to bottling, as it will continue to carbonate in the bottles, which could result in them exploding if there is too much pressure.

Results:

What did it look like?

When I saw my ginger beer, I so sludge at the bottom of the bottle. It was the yeast growing as it eats all of the sugar.

What does it smell like?

When I took  the lid off my ginger beer bottle, there was a really strong smell of ginger, and really strong stale alcohol.

What does it taste like?

When I tasted my ginger beer, it felt refreshing in my mouth. The ginger kinda made it spicy. The yeast has already eaten all of the sugar, so it did not taste sweet.

What happen if you shake it?

When I shook the bottle, it started fizzing up. It was the Carbon Dioxide made by the yeast.

Discussion:

What is yeast?

Yeast is a microscopic fungus, that has the ability to change sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide.

What did the yeast do to the Ginger Beer?

The yeast has eaten all of the sugar that was in the bottle and made it to alcohol and carbon dioxide.

What are some other good uses for yeast?

Making bread, making wine, biofuel, yeast extract

Yuri Gagarin's life

His career in a Soviet Air Force

After he graduated from the technical school in 1955, the Soviet Army drafted Yuri. On a recommendation, Yuri was sent to Chkalov Air Force Pilot's School in Orenburg, and soloed in a MiG-15 in 1957. While he was there, he met Valentina Ivanovna Goryacheva, a medical technician graduate of the Orenburg Medical School. They were then married on 7 November 1975, it was the same day Yuri graduated from Orenburg. He was assigned to the  Luostari airbase in Murmansk Oblast, close to the Norwegian border, where terrible weather made flying risky. He became a Lieutenant in the Soviet Air Forces on 5 November 1957, on 6 November 1959 he received the rank of Senior Lieutenant.

Yuri Gagarin was born on March 9, 1934.

He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.

He soon became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles.

His early life

Yuri Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino(renamed Gagarin after his death),near  Gzhatsk. His parents work in a collective farm. Yuri was the third of four children.

His family suffered during, Nazi occupation in World War II. Yuri’s village was occupied in November 1941 during the German advance on Moscow, and an officer took over Gagarin residence. Yuri’s family was allowed to build a mud hut, it had to be  3 by 3 metres inside, on the land behind there house, Yuri’s family spent a year and nine months until the end of the occupation. Yuri’s two older siblings were deported by the Germans to Poland for slave labour in 1943 and did not return until the war in 1945. 1 year later, Yuri’s family moved back to Gzhatsk, where Gagarin continued his secondary education.

At the age of 16 in 1950, Yuri entered into an apprenticeship as a foundry man at the Lyubertsy Steel Plant near Moscow, and he also enrolled at a “young workers” school for seventh grade evening classes. After he graduated in 1915 from both the seventh grade and the vocational school, he was selected for further training at the Saratov Industrial Technical School, where he studied tractors. Yuri volunteered for weekend training as a Soviet air cadet at a local flying club, where he learned to fly, at first in a biplane and later in a Yak-18 trainer.

Career in the Soviet space program

In 1960, after selecting and a selection process, Yuri was chosen with 19 other pilots for the Soviet space program. Yuri was further selected for an elite training group knows as the Sochi Six, where the first cosmonauts of the Vostok programme would be chosen. Yuri and the others perspective candidates were subjected to experiments designed to test physical and psychological endurance, he also went undertraining for the upcoming flight, Out of the twenty selected, the eventual choices for the first launch were Gagarin and Gherman Titov due to their performance during training sessions as well as their physical characteristics, space was limited in the small, Vostok cockpit, and both men were rather short. Gagarin was 1.57 metres (5 ft 2 in) tall.

Vostok 1

On the 12th of April 1961, the Vostok 3KA-3, spacecraft was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Yuri Gagarin, became both the first human to travel into outer space, and also the first human to complete a complete orbit around the earth. Following the flight, Gagarin told the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev that during reentry he had whistled the tune "The Motherland Hears, The Motherland Knows". The first two lines of the song are: "The Motherland hears, the Motherland knows/Where her son flies in the sky". This patriotic song was written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1951 (opus 86).Some have claimed that Gagarin commented during the flight, "I don't see any God up here." But Yuri’s friend Colonel Valentin Petrov said that Yuri never said such words. Yuri’s friend also said that Yuri had been  baptised into the Orthodox Church as a child, and a 2011. A magazine article said that  the rector of the Orthodox church in Star City saying, "Gagarin baptized his elder daughter Yelena shortly before his space flight, and his family used to celebrate Christmas and Easter and keep icons in the house.

Death

Sadly he died on 27th of March 1968 while he’s training from Chkalovsky Air Base, him and his flight instructor Vladimir Seryogin in a MiG 15 UTI crashed near a town called Kirzhach, Russia. There body were cremated and buried in the walls of Kremlin on Red Square.
How did the jet crashed?
The  cause of the accident is not certain, there’s a lot of theories about it. One of theories is that the air vent was left accidentally open result to oxygen deprivation (it makes your skin bluish and your heart rate increases, it can cause fainting ,consciousness, coma, seizures, and brain death). Another theory is an air traffic controller given him the wrong outdated weather information.

How the Earth was made

YouTube clip on how the Earth was made

  • 4.5 billion years ago,the sun was surrounded by a cloud of dust.

  • The dust cloud cooled and formed minerals.

  • The minerals began to clump together, held together by static electricity.

  • minerals stick together to make rocks and then the rocks stick together.

  • after 30 million years of rocks sticking together, the Earth was made.

  • Then the Earth melted into a big ball of lava.

  • All the metals sank, and all the rocks floated.

  • The outside cooled and formed the crust.

  • Then another planet crashed into Earth.

  • All the rocks blown into space collected together to make the Moon.

  • Every time a meteorite hit the forming Earth it brought a little drop of water.

  • Over 200 million years, billions and billions of meteorites brought enough water to earth which created our oceans.

  • Meteorite crashed into the planet, meteorite contained a chemical called Amino Acid.

  • Amino Acid stuck together to make a chain of Protein.

  • Protein were able to replicate(copy) themselves.

  • Since protein were able to replicate themselves they made DNA.

  • DNA then evolved to bacteria's

  • The bacteria ate all the poisons gases to make and release oxygen into our earth's atmosphere.
