Children of Blood and Bone - Essay

Essay Question: 1. Describe at least one memorable idea in the text.
Explain how the text helped you to understand this idea.

Essay:

Why do we push for a better world, even though we know that it is difficult? In the book ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ by Tomi Adeyemi, an important idea is ‘Pushing for a better world, even though it is difficult’.

We have the power to change the evil in the world. Importantly the Author herself states, ‘And just like Zelie and Amari, we have the power to change the evils in the world.’ This means that if we choose to, we are able to correct the wrongs in our society. I believe that this is important because no one can change the world but us. Just like how the UNICEF organisation is trying to better the world of children around the world. They’re slowly trying to change the world.

Even within the evils of the world, we can rise. On the simple summary on the back of the book it states ‘They killed my mother. They took our magic. They tried to bury us. Now We Rise.’ This means that even though there is so much flaws in the world we are able to fight back and rise, just like how the characters in the book did. In our society today it is important to rise and correct the wrongs in our world. There are people in the world that go on riots to prove their point of view, just like how Zelie, Tzain, Inan and Amari were doing.

We keep trying even if the odds are against us. Amari says “Reality told us we would fail. But again and again, we fought. We persevered. We rose.” This says that even though they were told that they would fail they kept persevering, and because of that they were able to rise. This is exactly the same with our world, we keep on going even though people tell us we would never succeed. In today’s society, giving up should never be an option. Nothing will get done if we give up trying. Just like how Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Often books reflect what happens in our real world, but Author’s do this in a way where the only way we’d realise it, is when we start to really think about it. This book is a really good example because it portrays a lot of the problems we have in our world and also gives us advice on how we can improve this. We must push for a better world even if it is difficult.
