How the body works

What we are learning: We are learning to explain how the body works.

I have been learning how the body functions. (HAIR)

Where hair comes from:
The hair starts from the skin. There are 2 hair follicle, that extend below the surface of the skin. At the base of each follicle is that hair bulb, where cells multiply.

As hair begins to grow, it pushes up and our of the follicle and through the skin, where it could be seen. Once hair is at the skins surface, the cells that make up a strand of hair, aren't alive anymore. That's why it doesn't hurt when hair is cut with scissors.

Jobs of the hairs on your body:

Hair is almost everywhere. Depending on where hair is, it has different jobs.
-The hair on top of the head keeps the head warm.
-The eyelashes protect the eyes from dirt and dust.
-The eyebrows protect your eyes from sweat dripping into them.

Why hair looks good:
The hair looks shiny because of Oil glands, also called Sebaceous glands.

Sebaceous glands produce the oil that makes hair shiny. Sometimes the Sebaceous glands pumps out too much oil that it makes the hair look greasy.

Hair falling out:

Hair is always falling out, and being replaced by new hair. Each hair grows for about 3 years, rest for a few months and then it falls out. A new hair grows out of the same follicle, replacing the old one. Out of the 100,000 hair on a typical persons head, about 50-100 hairs fall out each day.

Hair colours:
Hair comes in any sorts of colour. Hair colour comes from "Melanin". Melanin is a pigment.

The lighter someones hair is, the less melanin there is. Someone with blonde hair, has less melanin than someone with black hair. Also people lose the melanin in their hair, as they age.

Hair textures:

Hair comes in different textures (e.g. Curly, straight, and wavy)

Hair growing:
The hair grows half an inch per month. Some people can grow their hair really long.

Hair looking healthy:
Washing hair regularly helps keep it look great. It also helps to brush and comb hair regularly. A nutritious diet keeps your body and healthy from the inside and out.
