Sustainability

Aim:
I want to find out how to grow a sustainable garden.

Things I need to consider:
  • Can the plants grow in our climate?
  • What plants can you grow when planted in September?
  • How long do they take to mature? When can they be harvested?
  • How many mature plants will fit into my garden size?
  • How can I water them during the holidays?
  • How do I keep pests away?
Research:

I would like to grow :

  • Silver beet to be ready in November
  • Sunflower to be ready in November
  • Potatoes to be ready in December

Here is a system I found that will water the plants from under the soil.
It is a plastic bottle, and the bottom has been cut up, and the lid has been taken off.

Pest Control

How am I going to keep snails, slugs and birds away from my plants?

Basically its a plastic bottle that has been cut up in half, and has been put around the seed.

Method:

Equipment
  • Weeding/Gardening Tools
  • Seeds
  • Plastic 2L Water Bottles
  • Scissors
  • String and 1m ruler
  • Stakes
  • Fertiliser
Instructions
  1. Pull out the weeds and use a spade to turn over the soil.
  2. Mix the fertiliser in with the soil.
  3. Plant the seeds according to my map below.
  4. Put the plastic bottle greenhouses over the seeds.
  5. Add the self-watering system that I found.
